Applying semiotic concepts in my everyday activities has opened my eyes in many ways. I think I will never be able to look at things the same way! Watching TV or just hanging out with my friends, I look at the gender codes and why Americans do what we do. You would think something like that would have nothing to do with someone who’s major is animal science. But while taking a class about primates and their behaviors, one is constantly observing behavioral patterns, and humans aren’t’ very far off those charts! Even though I couldn’t directly apply American values to the primates, it made me think about how there is obviously some connection between us. Sometimes this begs the question of why we act the way we do, which I find most interesting and helpful. Although sometimes it’s pretty annoying, Trying to have a conversation with my mom the other day, she was complaining how my dad has been working less hours then her lately and she is tried when she gets home, but he doesn’t think about making dinner for her, or even offering. Without thinking, I tell her what Solomon and Maasik talk about what they call gender roles, the house is the women’s place and to take care of her family. In mid sentence as I talked to my mom I got flustered at the fact that yet once again Jim and your buddies Solomon and Maasik have interrupted my life and never letting me think of things of the normal way, “he’s just a guy.” Really, it is true but it goes deeper than just that but it is our cultures tradition.
Revising my own writing has taken hard work and sleepless nights. Applying semiotic concepts to my everyday life is forcing me to look at things differently and think outside the box. Before all this, my writing was rather plain and straight forward. From the time I started my first blog to my very last blog this semester, I believe my writing and ability to apply semiotic concepts to our American culture has improved a great deal and I believe my creativity as a writer has shined through. I have never used an “active voice” in my writing till now, or knew how to use one. My blog, “Let’s all shout random Lines at the movie screen” is about the Rocky Horror Picture show. It is a night where everyone gathers to have fun and be themselves. Fighting to fit in, yet stand out from the crowd. It took me a few tries to find my active voice within this blog. At first I had too much detail and not nearly enough about what was happening during the night. So I connected the idea to what I read and to American culture but by then it was too late. When rewriting it, I got to the point a little faster then proceeded to describe why and how it was all connected.
My favorite blog is “Let’s all be kids again!” It’s when I took a trip down to Disneyland with a few friends and had a great time. I think my writing shows I enjoyed not only going but writing about our adventure. Even though I am one to be guilty about spending my money on expensive Disney collectables, it really showed me how a brand name or slapping on a popular Disney characters face on a t-shirt can really make the prices jump through the roof! I think this blog shows excitement and someone could enjoy reading it and relate, maybe laugh at themselves as they realize they are guilty of wanting more of what is popular.
